Jaipur is one of those rare base cities where you can point the car in almost any direction and end up somewhere worth photographing. Lakes, forts, tiger forests, the Taj, a hill station, the blue city — all of them are within a tank of fuel. The hard part isn't finding a road trip from Jaipur; it's choosing one.
We've put together eight self-drive trips we keep coming back to, sorted roughly by distance. Each one works with a hatchback, but a few genuinely reward an SUV (we'll flag those). Distances are approximate door-to-door from central Jaipur and times assume a normal-traffic day, not a festival weekend.
1. Jaipur to Pushkar — ~145 km, ~2.5 hr
The easiest big win. A smooth run down NH-48 toward Ajmer, then a short hop over the hill into Pushkar. You get the holy lake, the Brahma Temple, and a bazaar built for aimless wandering. Off in winter it's mellow; during the camel-fair window it's chaos in the best way. This is the trip we'd hand a first-timer. Full write-up on our Jaipur to Pushkar route page.
2. Jaipur to Ranthambore — ~160 km, ~3 hr
If you want tigers, this is the one. The drive via Tonk and Sawai Madhopur is unremarkable until the last stretch, then the dry forest closes in and you remember why you came. Book your safari slot before you leave Jaipur — zones fill up. Self-drive means you choose your own pre-dawn departure instead of negotiating with a cabbie at 5 AM. See the Jaipur to Ranthambore route.
3. Jaipur to Ajmer — ~135 km, ~2.5 hr
Often done as a single loop with Pushkar, but Ajmer earns a stop on its own. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Ana Sagar Lake, and a pace of life that's a notch slower than Jaipur. A clean highway run almost the whole way. Details on the Jaipur to Ajmer route page.
4. Jaipur to Udaipur — ~395 km, ~6.5 hr
The long, gorgeous one. NH-48 most of the way, with the Aravallis rising as you go south. Udaipur — lakes, palaces, the most romantic city in Rajasthan — is worth every kilometre, but treat this as a two-night minimum, not a day trip. A comfortable car matters here; six and a half hours is a real drive. Plan it from the Jaipur to Udaipur route page.
5. Jaipur to Jodhpur — ~340 km, ~5.5 hr
The blue city. Mehrangarh Fort towering over a sea of indigo houses is one of the great views in India, and the drive there via NH-58 is fast and open once you clear Jaipur's edges. Jodhpur also makes a natural launch pad if you're tempted to push further west to Jaisalmer afterwards. See the Jaipur to Jodhpur route.
6. Jaipur to Mount Abu — ~500 km, ~8 hr
The big one for hill-station lovers. Rajasthan's only proper hill station sits at over 1,200 m, and the last stretch is a genuine climb — this is where an SUV stops being a luxury and starts being the sensible choice. Long drive, so break it overnight or do it as a leg of a wider Udaipur loop. Route details on the Jaipur to Mount Abu page.
7. Jaipur to Agra — ~240 km, ~4 hr
The Taj Mahal in a day, on your terms. The Yamuna Expressway makes the back half of this trip a breeze, and self-driving means you can leave Jaipur at 5 AM to catch the Taj at sunrise — the only time it isn't shoulder-to-shoulder. Pair it with Fatehpur Sikri on the way back. More on the Jaipur to Agra route page.
8. Jaipur to Neemrana — ~150 km, ~2.5 hr
The quick, classy escape. Neemrana's famous restored fort-palace sits just off NH-48 on the Delhi side, which makes it an easy half-day-plus-overnight that barely feels like a road trip. Great for a low-effort anniversary weekend or a slow Sunday with no fixed plan.
How to pick the right trip for your weekend
A rough rule we use: anything under ~200 km one way is a comfortable single-day or one-night trip. Pushkar, Ranthambore, Ajmer, Agra, and Neemrana all fit that. Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Mount Abu deserve two nights minimum — rushing them is how you end up spending your holiday in the driver's seat.
For car choice: a hatchback handles every route here mechanically, but if you're three-plus adults with luggage, or you're heading to Udaipur, Jodhpur, or the Mount Abu climb, the extra space and torque of an SUV changes the whole mood of the drive. Cars on BaeCars start from around ₹1,200/day; SUVs typically land in the ₹2,500–3,500/day range.
Self-drive practicalities for Rajasthan road trips
- Documents: Indian renters need a valid driving licence and Aadhaar. Foreign visitors need an International Driving Permit, passport, and Indian visa.
- Insurance: Comprehensive cover is included on BaeCars rentals, so you're not driving Rajasthan's highways exposed.
- Delivery: Doorstep and airport delivery are available — handy if you're flying into Jaipur and want the car waiting.
- Deposit: A refundable security deposit applies and is released back to you within about seven days of return.
- FASTag & fuel: Keep the FASTag topped up; most of these routes have multiple toll plazas. Tank up before you leave the city outskirts.
FAQ
Which is the best short road trip from Jaipur for a first-timer?
Pushkar. It's only ~145 km, the drive is easy highway most of the way, and you get a lake, a famous temple, and a wanderable bazaar without committing a whole long weekend.
Do I need an SUV for these Jaipur road trips?
Not for most of them — a hatchback handles the highway routes fine. But for Mount Abu's climb, the longer Udaipur and Jodhpur drives, or any trip with three-plus adults and luggage, an SUV is genuinely worth the extra cost.
Can I do a tiger safari at Ranthambore with a self-drive car?
You drive yourself to Ranthambore and stay nearby, but the safari itself is in official park vehicles — private cars aren't allowed inside the core zones. Book your safari slot in advance; they sell out.
How far in advance should I book the car?
For ordinary weekends, a few days is fine. For long weekends, festival dates, or the Pushkar fair window, book a week or two ahead — the good cars go first.
